Akismet rules. Considering that comment spammers seem to run adapted versions of chatterbots these days, this specific plugin continues to work miracles.
To wit, consider the two latest comment spams blocked (screenshotted instead of copy/pasted to limit spam generation):
I expect having to wade through this kind of bot-generated crap manually would be a major pain in the arse. Fortunately, Akismet does it all for me, I only have to validate by deleting them once and for all.
Having worked for a small company building custom-tailored antispam appliances in a professional past life, I cannot help but marvel at the quality of the filtering they have put in place. Best plugin, ever.

I have mixed feelings on Akismet. While it does make life much easier, it has been throwing up more and more false positives on other blogs I run, which is a pain…
Altitis, can’t agree with you more on Akismet, I love it!
@Leafshine: I think in 5 months, I’ve gotten 2 false positives, and one of those may still have been spam (but the spammer screwed up, so I let it through, since it really may have been legit but confused). And I don’t believe Akismet has EVER let through a single spam message.
For those reasons, I’m really shocked whenever I do see spam in the comments of a WordPress blog. What kinds of false positives do you get? (Remember, Akismet defaults to mark as spam, comments with 3 or more links–are those what you might be encountering?)
At this point, I’ve had 5 false positive in the last three days. I’m losing patience…
