It's hard, but if you isolate them and then battle them with witty but nice commentary, you can often recruit less courageous lurkers to join ranks and beat them down. Peer pressure as a force for good. :) However, you have to pick your battles. Too many asshats in area create an Asshat Singularity and you should simply run as fast as you can in the other direction before brain damage sets in.
