PUGs on new server
Seems like my luck isn’t really any better due to my playing hours, no matter the server I’m on.
I need to get to Arca and Steamvaults for my next Kara key fragments (the new guild just started last night and properly downed Attumen before faltering for the lack of a healer – I could have hopped in if I had ever gotten the right groups at the right time). All I get is SLabs runs, which is fine considering I really want the Breastplate of Many Graces off Vorpil.
Sadly, Vorpil remains the same challenge to PUGs as always. Sunday night, we proceed to Blackheart (and wipe twice clearing his room, hate that place), cleanly bring the Inciter down, and then wipe thrice on Vorpil before calling it. Monday, new PUG, I get called in at Vorpil, two wipes and NN everyone. Most annoying was that on the first one I died right on the dais, wasting a soulstone.
Navigating around the VWs remains the same challenge as ever, and I sure can’t blame the two tanks I had on those runs, the one single time I went in there as prot I failed as miserably as those two.
Considering the fact that I’m now sitting on one of EU’s oldest servers, though, I’m back to verifying the much older saying, PUGs will be PUGs, mature server be damned.
I hope I get a SV or an Arc run tonight. I need those goddamn fragments.


How do you guys tackle Vorpil? Whenever I pug the groups insist on trying to kite him around, which strikes me as a terrible strategy, and doomed to failure. (I’ve never seen it work)
Instead, I’ve always snuck around behind him, and fought him just in front of the hallway. The odd time he gets a VW boost, but it’s rare…. and if you just DPS him hard, you can get him in 1-2 teleports.
So far, I’ve either played North-South or Metronome (all South but you alternate between East and West wall while progressing). I’ve never been in a group with enough DPS potential to kill the bastard within the first two teleports, the least was three.
Alternatively, akin to BM, you can just move Vorpil to the nearest mound, DPS him down while one of your party kills the VWs before they rach him. Never tried it out so far.

This is the one that was used last time I was there and it worked much better than I expected
I hate Shadow Labs and just about every Paladin I know hate that place. Not a Paladin friendly place SL.
However, I’ve done all 4 bosses there several times yet still hate the place. The firs time ever we did Vorpil we wiped like 3 times trying to get it in a PuG at least i knew a few of the people and they knew i was a fine tank but it was just a odd fight. But we were willing to keep trying and on 4th we got it. When i left that instance i had 11% armor that place sucked that much. Boss Vorpil is a fight with some rules if you can say that. The way the fight works is facing the boss is you need to keep him away from the Void Walkers as much as possible. So facing the boss on stage you tank him while kiting him SOUTH (where you came in) while avoiding the spawn Void Walkers and while having DPS lay into him. I always drop consecrations while tanking him and kiting him.
At a certain point going SOUTH he teleports you back to stage platform and he rains fire on group on stage. As soon as you teleports you need to run NORTH (forward) of Vorpil normal position to avoid the flames but you also kite him that direction also and lay into his with DPS avoiding the VW also. The teleporting i’ve found is very disorienting as a tank. If he teleports you again then this time kite/tank him going back SOUTH until you get him down. I’ve done that fight at least 8 times or so and only ever had to take him first South then North and that’s it. Just need to lay into him with lots of DPS. On that fight tanking him I always keep up Judgement of Crusader for more damage and getting him down quicker.
On Murmur first couple of times I always had a problem timing his Sonic Booms. I got tired of having to move and always getting caught and slowed in movement and then group gets hit with resonance. So I always used a Priest for Healer after that for the healing variations. What i do stay in there and fight and not move that way no one ever gets hit with resonance for not been in melee range. The Priest before he does his Sonic Booms make sure i’m always topped off and drop maybe a HoT on me and fights pretty easy after that especially having at least 10k + Health makes it easier. Sometimes i pop a Nightmare Seed before the sonic booms for more health and fights pretty easy. That strat has worked every time since and since it worked multiple times…i’m not changing it whenever i run SL.
Hint for Vorpil’s teleports or Murmur’s Sonic booms (and other similar niceties): use a bossmod.
BigWigs (Ace2) completed with LittleWigs (which has the 5-men bosses) will warn you about 10 seconds before the next teleport, and on time for the Sonic booms. Works well and helps some.
